WORLD PREMIERE

The Disappearance of Robin Hood

Archfilmfest programme at LFA 2018

The sold-out world premiere event of The Disappearance of Robin Hood produced and directed by the Urban-Think Tank, was an evening screening produced by Archfilmfest London in partnership with LFA2018 and the Swiss Embassy in London.

THE SILVER BUILDING, Thu, 28 June 2018, 19:30 – 22:30 BST

THE DISAPPEARANCE OF ROBIN HOOD

A film by the Urban-Think Tank

The documentary explores the origins of and ideas behind Robin Hood Gardens, the London social housing complex designed by architects Peter and Alison Smithson in the 1960s. Produced by the Urban-Think Tank, which aims to open discussion around the housing crisis that London faces today, the film presents us with the history of the building and its community as intertwined with contemporary urban narratives of the city.

Today the Smithsons’ ideas about connecting buildings, users, and sites no longer hold the same value for the authorities. In 2015 the second application to have Robin Hood Gardens listed failed, and in 2017 demolition began on the complex to make way for one of the many large luxury redevelopments unfolding across the city. The housing state now seems destined for preservation in museum galleries and books, rather than as built space serving the people for whom it was conceived.

The evening consisted of screening The Disappearance of Robin Hood presented by its director and co-founder of Urban-Think TankAlfredo Brillembourg (ETH Zurich). After the screening, Charlotte Skene Catling hosted a roundtable with Brillembourg and filmmaker Klearjos Eduardo Papanicolaou, welcoming the company and insights of Sarah Wigglesworth (Sarah Wigglesworth Architects) and Simon Smithson (partner at Roger Stirk Harbour+Partners and son of Peter and Alison Smithson). Finally, a very active Q&A with the public took hold extending over drinks offered at The Silver Building bar.

This event is generously supported by the Swiss Embassy in London, the Urban-Think Tank, and the Swiss Institute of Technology Zurich.
